Crowns, Onlays & Bridges
Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are cap-shaped tooth-like structures that can are placed over your damaged tooth. The tooth is typically root canal treated before the placement of the crown. You can think of it as a snug hat that is for your tooth. The crown is cemented onto your tooth structure. A dental crown looks like a real tooth and restores it's strength and appearance.
Onlays
Like a dental crown, onlays are placed over your damaged tooth. The tooth is also typically root canal treated before the placement of the onlay. Onlays can be considered a type of crown that does not cover as much of your existing tooth as compared to a conventional crown. Onlays are more conservative compared to a crown and can be considered if there is still enough solid tooth structure available. Like a crown, an onlay is cemented onto your tooth structure and mimics a real tooth.
Dental Bridges
A dental bridge is a procedure to replace one (or more) missing tooth. The bridge is used to fill the gap with artificial teeth. A bridge is made of crowns on the teeth adjacent of the missing tooth. As such, proper preparation will need to be made on the adjacent supporting teeth. The crowns shall provide support to your false tooth and are cemented onto your tooth structure. A bridge looks like real teeth and replace the function of the missing tooth.
